Constant increase in water demand and high rates of water pollution create the need for water disinfection and sterilization. Due to this reason, OSMO supplies specially designed devices and systems operating based on the following methods:
Chlorination with dosing pumps
Chlorination is considered to be one of the most widespread water disinfection method using sodium hypochlorite (Na0Cl) or other chlorine compounds. Dosing pumps add small amounts of chlorine in predetermined time periods. It is usual that inductive diaphragm pumps be used for small and medium chlorine supply. In desalination units, dosing pumps are used at the stage of pre-processing and post-processing adding anti-incrustation agents, chlorine, acids, disinfectants, algicides, dechlorination agents, etc. However, in most cases the main application is chlorine addition.
Ozonization
The most natural method for water disinfection is by far the use of special ozonization devices, such as ozone generators. Ozonizers are devices which transform atmospheric oxygen 02 το 03 (ozon) which is defined as the most drastic oxidizing agent used for water sterilization. It is safe since it contains high energy charge which is effective as it oxidizes organic elements and microorganisms. The typical time required for decomposition is less than one hour. For extensive storing of produced water partial chlorination is required. Although ozonization is the ideal solution, it is not widely applied due to the high cost of its installment. However, it is used in water bottling plants, swimming pools and hydromassage systems.
Ultraviolet Radiation, UV
The basic principles of this method are known since 1919, but only the use of technologically advanced materials during the last decade has managed to improve the efficiency of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation activates photochemical intramolecular reaction at a wavelength of 253.7 nm, resulting in the split of the cell membrane, as well as DNA and RNA.
As a result, there is no regeneration of microorganisms which are inevitably led to destruction. The amount of the absorbed energy is proportional to the disinfectant action of each device. Due to this, maximum time of processing in the unit is desired. Based on the principle that water is the result of an electromagnetic phenomenon, its physicochemical parameters (PH, conductivity, REDOX, taste, smell) are not altered.
Each unit consists of:
- main body made of stainless steel
- radiation part with low pressure bulbs
- quartz pipe to enhance safety
- a panelboard with a transformer, timer, operation/ standby switch and bulbs
Testing Instruments
These instruments may proceed to online measurement and testing of the physicochemical parameters such as chlorine, REDOX, PH, conductivity, turbidity, oxygen.
Legionella- Solutions to problems arising by the development of the bacterium.
OSMO’s sterilization department ensures the supply of the following services:
- E.W.G.L.I. (European Working Group for Legionella Infections) to test and prevent Legionella infections (has been operating since June 2003)
- Study for preventive measures
- Study for providing solutions to acute contaminations
- Technical and scientific staff intervention
- Network disinfection
- Installation of repairing and parameter observation systems in case of inhibition
In order to avoid development or even destroy the bacterium, this method is always applied in accordance with the defined concentration of the bacterium in the analysed water sample, the construction materials of the network (galvanized material, copper, PVC, PP, INOX), the parameters of the network design (pressure, temperature, thermal expansion index), etc.
OSMO’s disinfection department staff is appropriately qualified to study and solve any contamination problem that may arise, both by preventing it and by restraining it.
